I drew out all my money and together we did vow We met down by the river, on the final day in MayĪnd when I leaned down to kiss her, she did not turn away 'Cause he knew I wanted Jeannie and I'd have her like I said Her father was a lawman who he swore he'd shoot me dead She came down from Knightstown with her hands hard from the lineįrom the first time I laid eyes on her I knew that she'd be mine I was born down by the river where the dirty water flowsĪnd the cold wind cut through me, it cut right through my clothesĪnd the anger and the yearning, like fever in my veins ©1980 Zevon Music (BMI) and Bruce Springsteen (ASCAP) Now stand in the fire, stand in the fire, stand in the fire Ya' know, I'm asking her to dance with me I don't know who mastered the original CD but love the last track with its beautiful backing vocals arranged by Carl Wilson.Stand in the fire, stand in the fire, stand in the fire If it has a feel like a Eagles record, it's courtesy of the harmonies by Henley and Frey. I love the music to "The French Inhaler". Phil Everly provides the wonderful harmony parts on "Frank and Jesse James" while Lindsay Buckingham provides the harmony vocals on "PPPM". If I'm not mistaken the first side closed with "The French Inhaler". From the Everly Brothers (and, yes, James Brothers)inspired track "Frank and Jesse James" to the autobiographical "Mama Couldn't be Persuaded" and killer versions of both "Poor Poor Pitiful Me" & "Carmelita" (better than Linda Ronstandt's versions although she does a great job with both). Produced by Jackson Browne the album is track for track one of Warren's strongest releases. Warren would do much, much better on his "first" album "Warren Zevon". "A Bullet for Ramona" continues to hint at his dark side and "Gorilla" prefigures "Gorilla You're A Desperado". It hints at many of the themes that would show up on later albums as well. Although a very, very rough debut there were some gems here including "She Quit Me" which ended up on "Midnight Cowboy". Recorded after Warren's duo Lyme and Cybelle had ended, "Wanted: Dead or Alive" finds Warren still developing as an artist. Although it's not a great album (Warren used to make fun of it later in his career and rightly considered "Warren Zevon" his true debut), this album has a couple of notable tracks including "Tule's blues" (later remade for "Excitable Boy" but unreleased until this year). Well everyone else has gotten some love lately why not Warren? His first "offical" album "Wanted: Dead or Alive" was ignored by the public.
